BRIEFLY
For more than 30 years, Lance Cowan has worked behind the scenes with some of America’s most respected songwriters, including Joe Ely, Nanci Griffith, Lyle Lovett, and Michael Martin Murphey. Along the way, he quietly developed his own voice, shaped by influences ranging from Jackson Browne to John Prine. His songs have been recorded or performed by artists such as Joan Baez, Janis Ian, and David Mallett. His 2024 debut So Far, So Good and the follow-up Against The Grain have both earned strong critical acclaim.

“Last year, Lance Cowan proved that a veteran Americana PR man could make an album on par with those of his clients. This year, he proved that he could beat the sophomore slump. The mid-’70s country-rock instrumentation and vocal harmonies remain, but they’re at the service of sharper hooks, hooks that would’ve embedded themselves in the Top 40 back when millions were checking into the Hotel California.”

Chosen among editors' favorites for 2025

“(Against The Grain) further attest to his way with both melodies and lyrics.”
Peter Blackstock / No Depression
“If he’d never made another album, he’s already be something like the Shohei Ohtani of music - a two way player in a game in which being a one-way player is hard enough!”
World Radio
“Lance, you killed it! A true picturesque soundtrack for all us rockin’ baby boomers! I’m still listening!”
Richard Young / The Kentucky HeadHunters
“Brilliant! You are a songwriter indeed!”
Michael Jaworek / The Birchmere
